Deputy Treasurer of the Maryland Democratic Party Barbara Goldberg Goldman resigned after an email surfaced in which she questioned if Black candidates could win Maryland’s gubernatorial election.

The email was published Sunday and was sent to “party insiders.” It explained Goldberg Goldman’s reasoning for backing, Tom Perez, former Democratic National Committee chairman, for governor. Perez is Dominican-American.

“So, my thinking beyond here is the aged-old question: Which candidate(s) have a better chance in the General Election of beating an attractive female Hogan team member for who both Dems and Repubs have expressed genuine likeability,” the email began.

“Consider this: Three African American males have run statewide for Governor and have lost. Maryland is not a Blue state. It’s a purple one. This is a fact we must not ignore. In the last 20 years, only eight have been with a Democratic Governor. We need a winning team. IMHO.”

The controversy was met with backlash from the three Black candidates running to be Maryland’s next governor. They include former Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, former Obama Education Secretary John King, and author Wes Moore.

“MDP Deputy Treasurer Barbara Goldberg Goldman's email about the electability of Black candidates has no place in the future of the Democratic Party in Maryland, nor is it acceptable coming from a party official,” King wrote on Twitter. “She must resign.”

“The idea that there would be skepticism about a candidate’s electability because they are Black should have no place in the Democratic Party in Maryland,” a spokesperson for Moore’s campaign said in a statement. “Goldberg Goldman’s resignation was appropriate, but it should not be lost on anyone who benefitted from these unacceptable racist statements.”

Goldberg Goldman later issued an apology and officially resigned on Monday.
